Newbie Know-Hows
Only once does a person turn twenty-one. It is a day full of adventure and fun, as well as a drink or two. Up to this day you’ve always been the designated driver. Then out of nowhere the waiter ask if you want something to drink and you do, and you can. Since it is your special day you of course are going to take advantage and order something special off of the drink menu. You’ve never looked seriously at the drink menu before, its always been the joke “if I were twenty-one…” but now you can. The waiter is hovering over you, putting on more pressure and you still can’t decide what to order. While it seems like there should be an easy fix for this, there isn’t, but here are fourteen tips for your first time drink ordering, or for those of us who have been twenty-one for a while and still get nervous when ordering a drink.
- Look at the specials
- Start small
- Don’t mix alcohol
- It doesn’t have to be fancy
- Ask for help
- Don’t look at the price
- If you didn’t like it before, likelihood is you still won’t
- It’s okay to ask for water first
- You have a smart phone, use it. Look it up if you don’t know what something is
- Order the same thing as the people you’re with, if you don’t like it they’ll drink it
- Ask for extra mixer in your drink
- Don’t order a shot
- Never say “surprise me”
- Tip the bartender
And an extra piece of advice for people who really struggle… look up the menu before you go.
